EDI Training for Staff
Creating a culture where everyone feels respected, valued and able to thrive is a shared responsibility across the 黑料不打烊. Our equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) training offer is designed to help colleagues develop the knowledge, confidence and practical skills needed to contribute to an inclusive working and learning environment.
We offer a range of interactive sessions exploring topics such as bystander intervention, cultural capability, hate crime awareness and introductory sessions on EIAs and equality charters. These sessions support the University's wider commitment to fostering an inclusive and welcoming community for all and are designed to complement our mandatory online training.
Training can be delivered in a variety of formats to suit different needs, including short awareness-raising sessions, facilitated workshops, team discussions and longer development events. Sessions can be incorporated into existing meetings, departmental away days or dedicated staff development programmes.
In addition to our scheduled learning opportunities, we can work with faculties, departments and professional services teams to design bespoke sessions tailored to local priorities, challenges or areas of interest. Our approach is collaborative, practical and responsive to the needs of individual teams.
Depending on capacity, we can also deliver training to external organisations and community groups within Devon and Cornwall. Please email EDI@exeter.ac.uk to request further information.

Student EDI and Consent Training FAQs
We support the delivery of the student EDI and Consent online training modules available on ELE. Consent training is now mandatory for students, however the training is about more than compliance. It is an opportunity to help students understand consent, build respectful relationships, know where to access support and contribute to a safer University community. Staff support and encouragement are essential in helping students engage with this important learning.
If you are a member of staff supporting students to complete their training, please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions:

The Consent Training helps students understand their rights and responsibilities, recognise healthy behaviours and relationships, and contribute to a culture where consent is understood, respected and actively sought.
The module forms part of the University's wider approach to preventing harassment, sexual misconduct and other harmful behaviours. It also supports the University's obligations under the Office for Students (OfS) regulatory requirements and demonstrates our commitment to student safety, wellbeing and respectful campus communities.
Staff play an important role in encouraging student engagement.
Research and experience show that students are more likely to complete important training when they hear about it consistently from trusted members of the University community.
By promoting the module and reminding students to complete it, you will help increase completion rates which will:-
- Reinforce the importance of consent and respectful behaviours
- Support a safer University environment
- Ensure students are aware of the resources and support available to them
A mention in inductions and welcome activities or student communications can make a significant difference.

Our evidence base and analytics show that engagement is highest during students' first few months at university. Arrival at University can be a transitional time and early engagement in this training helps students to understand how to navigate this significant life event with confidence and understanding. It also builds awareness of available support from the start of their university journey.
The module takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
Students can work through the content at their own pace.
The University strongly encourages all students to engage with the training where possible, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, relationship status or background. However we understand that some students, particularly those who have experienced harassment, sexual misconduct or other harmful behaviours, may find elements of the training difficult or distressing.
Students who feel unable to complete the training can access the dispensation/opt-out form, which is available beneath the module on ELE.

Staff should act within the scope of their role and seek advice if they are unsure how to respond.
The Consent Training is a key element of a wider programme aimed at enhancing student safety and wellbeing. The programme is delivered through the Wellbeing, Inclusion and Culture portfolio, in collaboration with Education and Academic Services.
The University works closely with partners including local authorities, community organisations and Devon & Cornwall Police to support student safety both on and off campus.
This includes work relating to:
- Prevention of harassment and sexual misconduct
- Student welfare and wellbeing
- Community safety initiatives
- Awareness campaigns and educational resources
- Reporting and support mechanisms for students
Students are only required to complete the training once.
However, many continuing students may not have previously completed the module. Staff are encouraged to remind returning students to complete the training if opportunities arise through teaching, meetings or student communications.
Postgraduate students should also be encouraged to complete the training as issues around consent impact all of our student community.
If you have questions about the content, delivery or promotion of the Consent Training, please contact the EDI inbox: EDI@exeter.ac.uk
