ESI Challenge of the Month

Dr Lucy Woodall (Centre for Ecology and Conservation) has taken up the ESI Challenge of the Month for September 2026.

Dr Woodall's team were the first to demonstrate the new ‘rariphotic’ zonation (approx. 130-300m) with benthic life in Bermuda, and confirmed this with Indian Ocean studies, suggesting this is a global phenomenon. These studies have been used to support government level commitments to protected areas and to develop effective management plans (Bermuda, Seychelles, Maldives and Comoros)

Dr Lucy Woodall will deliver the #esiChallengeOfTheMonth (hybrid) talk "Illuminating the deep ocean" in the ESI Trevithick Room on Monday 28 September 1 - 2pm.

In a rapidly changing world it is becoming even more important for us to make science-based decisions to support ocean conservation and sustainable management. Our lack of knowledge on deep reefs and the biased nature of this knowledge is a barrier to supporting decisions that are required to fulfil the 30% by 2030 protection commitments made by many countries, and to optimise the opportunities presented with the High Seas Treaty that became law earlier this year. Join me on a voyage of discovery to explore our deep reefs, what we know, what we need to know and why now.
